Delsym: Relief from Cough and Cold Symptoms with Promethazine and Dextromethorphan

Delsym is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication designed to provide multi-symptomatic relief from cough and cold symptoms. The active ingredients in Delsym are promethazine and dextromethorphan.

Promethazine

Promethazine is an antihistamine that works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It also acts as an antitussive (cough suppressant) by decreasing the cough reflex.

Dextromethorphan

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that works by acting on a specific receptor in the brain to decrease the cough reflex.

Multi-Symptomatic Relief

Delsym offers multi-symptomatic relief for cough and cold symptoms, including:

• Cough
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Sore throat
• Headache
• Body aches

Long-Acting Formula

Delsym’s long-acting formula provides relief for up to 12 hours, allowing you to sleep through the night without interruption from coughing or other cold symptoms.

Directions for Use

• Adults and children 12 years and over: Take 10-20 mL every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 60 mL in 24 hours.
• Children under 12 years: Consult a doctor.

Warning

• Do not use Delsym for more than 5 days without consulting a doctor.
• Do not use Delsym if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days.
• Do not use Delsym if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Storage

Store Delsym at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

Warnings and Precautions

• May cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not operate machinery or drive a vehicle until you know how Delsym affects you.
• Do not use alcohol or other CNS depressants while taking Delsym.
• Consult a doctor before using Delsym if you have a history of seizures, asthma, or other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
• Consult a doctor before using Delsym if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Promethazine HCl 6.25 mg and Dextromethorphan HBr 15 mg per 10 mL (5 mL for children’s formula).

Inactive ingredients: Alcohol, artificial flavor, citric acid, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 40, glycerin, methylparaben, propylparaben, purified water, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, sodium saccharin, and sucrose.
